The faculty in the Department of Communication & Digital Media serve as academic advisors for majors and minors in the subject area. While students are welcome to speak with their advisor at any time, they are required to meet with their advisor during Academic Advising Week in October and March in order to plan for the following semester. The following is a helpful checklist when preparing for this advising meeting.
Sign up for a meeting time with your academic advisor
The Department of Communication & Digital Media faculty typically post a sign-up sheet outside their office door prior to the start of Academic Advising Week. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor before they will be cleared to register. If you do not know who your faculty advisor is, check your Experience account. Besides courses for next semester, students also should plan to discuss possible internship opportunities, co-curriculuar opportunities such as field studies or other experiences, and preparation for graduate school, if relevant.
Familiarize yourself with requirements
Check out the Communication & Digital Media Major and Minor requirements to see what courses you may need to take next. You also should consult your General Education audit (available on Experience), as well as the requirements for any other major or minor you may have. Note any prerequisites that may exist for particular courses.
Take a look at the following semester's course offerings
Go to the Open Course list for information about class meeting days, times and locations, as well as availability of seats. Generate a list of possible courses for the following semester, based on the requirements you identified in step 2. You will be expected to come to your advising appointment with an idea of which courses you'd like to take next semester.
Check for holds on your account
If you have an unpaid library fine, or some other issue you need to take care of, you may have a hold placed on your registration. This means that you will not be allowed to register for classes until that is taken care of. Check your Experience account to see if you have any holds, and take care of them as soon as possible so your ability to register is not delayed.
Meet with your academic advisor
During Advising Week, students are required to meet with their academic advisor. Students who miss their appointment time may not be able to rescheduled until later, which may delay their ability to register. During this meeting, be sure to get any questions you may have answered by your advisor.
Enter your preferences on Experience
Before your registration window opens, you are able to enter your class preferences in Experience, to make the registration process more efficient. It's important that you identify "back-up" options in case one or more of the classes you want to take are closed by the time you register.
Register at your assigned time
Your registration time and date is listed on your Experience account. If you are unable to get into a class, contact the professor to ask if she or he maintains a waitlist. It is recommended that you register for a full course load even though you may be trying to get into a different class that is currently closed. You also may keep an eye on the Open Courses list in case seats become available later on.
